Baseball between the Wars

The years between WWI and WWII were marked first by the advent of the live ball in 1920, which dramatically increased home runs and batting averages, leading to more offense, and ultimately, more fans. But the prosperity of the Roaring '20s gave way to the gloom of the Great Depression, and many teams struggled to survive. Attendance fell, but the action on the field was as compelling as ever, with new stars like Joe Dimaggio and Ted Williams replacing the heroes of yesteryear like Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. This display includes a number of images taken by George Burke, who remains one of the game's greatest photographers. He took the photo that was used to create the standup of Mule Haas at the left, along with the ones below that have die-cut rounded corners. Hall of Famers displayed here include Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Ed Roush, Mickey Cochrane, Charlie GehringerGrover Cleveland  Alexander, Dizzy Dean, Lefty Grove, Joe Cronin, Rogers Hornsby, Al Simmons, Ted Lyons, Johnny Mize and Pee Wee Reese.
