1953 Baltimore Orioles signed Wilson "Ball Hawk" Glove

Here is a never-used Wilson “Ball Hawk” glove that was signed by 31 members of the 1953 Baltimore Orioles. Before the Orioles joined the American League in 1954, they were one of the most successful teams in the minor leagues. In ’53, the team played in the International League and was managed by Don Heffner, who later managed the Reds in 1966. Once the last true independent team in the minors, the Orioles were now a Phillies farm club. Those signing the glove include Roy Weatherly — a former Indians star who played on the Yankees’ title team in 1943 — and Jocko Thompson and Ken Heintzelman, a pair of left-handed hurlers who pitched for the pennant-winning 1950 Phillies, who were famously known as the “Whiz Kids.” Also signing the glove was pitcher Jack Sanford, who won the 1957 NL Rookie of the Year and was the runner-up for the 1962 NL Cy Young Award.
